From: Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil, IA - 20 Dec 2002
KICKAPOO, Kan. - Iowa School for the Deaf stormed past Kickapoo Nation in a girls non-conference prep basketball game Thursday.
The Iowa Deaf boys did not fare as well, dropping a 69-57 decision to Kickapoo.
"The girls played hard," said Iowa Deaf coach Mike Shannon. "They all did some nice things."
Karen Ruckman led the team offesively with 12 points. Several Bobcats faired well off the boards, including Rachel Kill Small and Erin Huntrods with eight rebounds each.
"Many of the girls played very well," said Shannon. "Jada Hart played a nice floor game for us, Sarah Brown did well with four steals and five assists.
"It was a good game, and I'm pleased with the all over effort of the girls."
In the boys' game, "it was a very rough and physical environment," said Bobcat coach Dan Gradoville. "It really caused our team problems. (Kickapoo) came out and shot real well for the last three quarters, and won the game."
Bobcat Edlin Dorn had his sixth double-double in six games by scoring 27 points and snaring 15 rebounds. He also added six blocks for ISD.
Freshman Eric Humlicek scored eight points and had five seasons, while Nic Upchurch added seven points and pulled down six boards in the loss.
