A BECKENHAM vicar is encouraging the deaf community to "see" the Word of God using the latest technology.

Reverend Nick Lang, of St John's Church, Eden Park, has set up a computerised screen projector to allow deaf worshippers to follow hymns and services.

The idea came to him after a deaf couple had their child baptised at the church and someone had to use sign language for the congregation.

Mr Lang said: "When we thought about it we realised we could put all the prayers and words of hymns on the screen. A hearing person could simply highlight the line we were at."

From January, the 10am service on the fourth Sunday of each month will be signed and supported by the projector.
