From Staff Reports

ROMNEY, W.Va. — The West Virginia Deaf girls, led by junior Mindy Spencer, tip off their season today at Eastern North Carolina Deaf in the East-West Classic.

The Lions, 10-10 last year, have three returning starters in Spencer, junior Holly Romanello and junior Carolyn Rockow.

Spencer finished among the area leaders in scoring last year with a 15.1 average. Romanello averaged just under seven points.

Other returning players are sophmores Hannah Pauley and Lisa Parent. Rounding out the squad are sophomores Ashley Lease and freshman Jessica Morrison.

Among the players lost to graduation were second-team All-Area Danielle Surber (19.6 points) and Tabitha Keplinger. The Lions finished second in a nine-team field in last year’s Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association tournament in Scranton, Pa.

“This year we have a young team and are rebuilding again,’’ said coach Michael Surber. “Even though it is a small roster (seven players), the girls are determined. They know they will need a lot of improvement and the teams they’ll be facing are tough, but they don’t give up easily.”
