Police investigate alleged abduction, indecent assault

Wanganui police are seeking a man who may be hearing impaired man following an alleged abduction and indecent assault in the city early this morning.

Detective Sergeant Dave Kirby said a man approached a 23-year-old woman in Majestic Square about 4.30am. He appeared to be hearing impaired and used sign language to communicate.

The man followed the woman and grabbed her as she walked away along Maria Place, allegedly forcing her into public toilets in Hill Street, Mr Kirby said in a statement.

The woman managed to escape and contact police.

The offender was described as a male Maori in his early 20s with short, dark hair and about 175cm tall.

Police wanted to hear from anyone with information.
