Arrows advance in ESDAA Div. II tourney

BRATTLEBORO -- Jaclyn Feder-Piasek scored 22 points in her return to Austine as the Arrows opened up the ESDAA Div. II girls basketball tournament with a 48-31 win over St. Mary's on Thursday.
Feder-Piasek, who just transfered back to Austine, teamed up with Jennifer Harbart (15 points, 12 rebounds and four assists) to help the Arrows outscore St. Mary's 15-10 in the second half.
"I'm very pleased with the girls' performance," Arrow coach Nick Lalanne said. "We played hard for the full game. We didn't quit, and we played smart."
The sixth seeded Arrows (9-6) will face No. 2 West Virginia in the winner's bracket today at 8 p.m. at Austine.
In other tournament action, West Virgina easily advanced to the second round of the eight-team tournament by blasting 47 A&E, 48-17. Mindy Spencer led West Virginia with 23 points.
Rochester defeated Millneck Manor in the first game of the tournament, 35-21.
In the second game of the day, No. 1 Delaware destroyed Scranton, 78-30. Delaware School for the Deaf was led by Dante Hudson (24 points), Melinda McDowell (23) and Danielle Franks (19).
The loser's bracket starts first today, Millneck Manor faces Scranton at 2 p.m. Next up is St. Mary's vs. 47 A&E at 3:45 p.m. Rochester and Delaware kick off the winner's bracket at 6:15 p.m. and Austine ends things vs. West Virginia at 8 p.m.
