Head-Royce powers past CSD

FREMONT -- Jesse Barnes and Ari King combined for 21 points in the first quarter to key a 28-9 run that led Head-Royce High to a 56-42 Bay Counties League-East boys basketball win over California School for the Deaf on Thursday afternoon. Head-Royce (16-6, 9-1) is tied with Berean Christian for the league lead with a showdown in Walnut Creek set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. Barnes scored a game-high 16 points, while King finished with 11. Head-Royce built a 44-16 lead in the first half before resting the regulars for the final 16 minutes. Chris Ivory led CSD (10-10, 3-5) with 14 points while Charles Herbold had 10.

Girls basketball

OAKLAND -- Twelve different players scored, leading Head-Royce to an easy 48-19 BCL-East victory over California School for the Deaf.

Elena Finch led the Jayhawks (15-6, 9-1) with nine points and also had four steals and four rebounds. Jessica Hing had six points, eight steals and five assists.

CSD got a game-high 14 points from Rene Holcomb.
