Mary Washington sets mark with win

A late surge lifted the Mary Washington College men's basketball team to its school-record 18th victory of the season--beating Gallaudet 74-70 yesterday in Washington.
The Eagles (18-4, 8-3 Capital Athletic Conference) needed a game-ending 11-2 spurt to avoid losing to the Bison (4-19, 0-12).
Junior Evan Fowler finished with 21 points and seven assists for MWC. Freshman Ian Sumers added 17 points.
The Eagles' Cris Hairston made a follow shot with less than three minutes left to put MWC ahead for good, 69-68. Jon Hurd's three-pointer with 1:17 remaining gave the Eagles their final margin.
MWC's previous record for wins in a season was 17 set in 1985-86. The Eagles, ranked 25th in the nation in Division III, visit Goucher on Wednesday.

MWC sank seven of eight three-point shots in the second half to pull away from the Bison in Washington.
The Eagles (7-14, 3-8 CAC) had balanced scoring. Diane Frantz led with 14 points followed by Caitlin Wilkinson (13), Adrienne Barnes (12) and Laura Hanks (11). Hanks was three for three from long range, Anderson and Wilkinson each were two for two.
Gallaudet (3-20, 0-12) got 12 points and 15 rebounds from Cassey Ellis.
