Memorial Service for Julia Mayes
Washington, DC--A memorial service for Julia B. Mayes will be held on Thursday, April 10 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Peikoff Alumni House on the Gallaudet University campus.
Mrs. Mayes passed away on January 31, 2003 at the age of 81. She had a teaching career that spanned 37 years, 27 at the Michigan School for the Deaf and 10 at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. After she retired from teaching, Mrs. Mayes did volunteer work at Gallaudet’s Visitors Center, conducting tours of the campus for the numerous visitors the University receives every year. She also served on the board of the National Health Care Foundation for the Deaf and volunteered at the Otis House.
Mrs. Mayes was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas A. Mayes who was also a renowned educator and advocate for improving the education and quality of life for deaf children, their families, and for adults.
