Mississauga coach guides deaf hockey team to title
From: Mississauga News, Canada - Mar 26, 2003
The Canadian Deaf ice hockey team has captured its second consecutive world title.
The team, coached by Louis Carnavale of Mississauga, defeated the U.S. 5-2 to capture the gold medal in the six-nation tournament at Sundsvaal, Sweden, just north of Stockholm recently.
The Canadian team breezed through the round-robin competition undefeated. The Canadians beat Germany 20-0, host Sweden 6-2, Finland 6-2 and Russia 4-2 before the triumph over the U.S.
"It was a great tournament for us," said Carnavale, who coached the team last year. "We went undefeated for the first time ever and that's just tremendous.
"There was a lot of support because everyone wanted to see the Canadians and the Americans go at it in the final. It was pretty exciting."
