Richardson's choice to lead deaf commission faces opposition

(Santa Fe-AP) -- Governor Richardson's choice to head the New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons is facing opposition.
About 20 deaf people and advocates for the deaf community criticized Cindra Stahl during a commission meeting Thursday.
Richardson wants Stahl to succeed Karen Courtney-Peterson as executive director of the commission.
The commission Thursday accepted the resignation of Courtney-Peterson, effective May 27th.
Stahl's opponents say Stahl is neither deaf nor hard of hearing.
They also say she does not know American Sign Language and could not effectively represent the deaf community.
Stahl, who has worked as an audiologist, declines comment.
