Breaking down the barriers of silence
From: News Shopper, UK - May 7, 2003
THE isolation many deaf people face will be explored during a series of special events.
Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) will see road shows going out across the borough in a bid to make hearing people aware of their needs.
An exhibition and information stand will be at Queen Elizabeth Hospital today, Asda, in Charlton, tomorrow and the Forum@Greenwich, in Trafalgar Road, on Saturday.
Greenwich Council's Robin Ash, who is profoundly deaf and works with deaf people spoke through an interpreter to say: "Isolation can be a major problem for deaf and hard of hearing people. This is why we want hearing people to help us break down the barriers."
