Indiana School for the Deaf Champions of the National Academic Bowl
Washington, DC--Indiana School for the Deaf defeated University High School (Irvine, CA), 61 to 47, to win the 7th Annual National High School Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, May 5 in the Gallaudet University Kellogg Conference Center. Pia Marie Paulone, a senior at the Indiana School, also won the Outstanding Player Award.
In addition to Pia Marie Paulone, The Indiana School for the Deaf team consisted of Drew Robarge, Jon Mowl, Ellen O'Hara, and Trevor Baldwin. Mary Kovatch and Chuck Daube were the coaches for the team.
Third place went to Monroe #1 BOCES (Rochester, NY) who defeated Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (Colorado Springs, CO). Lincoln High School of Tallahassee, FL won the Sportsmanship Award.
Altogether, 10 schools competed in the National competition out of about 70 schools nationwide. Regional competitions were held in the spring and the top two winners from each of the five regions came to Gallaudet University May 2-5.
The Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students is sponsored by Gallaudet University, The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, and AT&T Consumer. The purpose of the Academic Bowl is to foster the pursuit of academic excellence; promote a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship; and to encourage social opportunities for collegiality among students.
