NTID's Deaf Professional Group Presents Award of Excellence

ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 30-The Deaf Professional Group at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf selected Assistant Professor Kathy Varone as the recipient of its 2003 Award of Excellence. The award is presented annually to hearing members of the Rochester Institute of Technology community, who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

"Kathy meets all the criteria for the award," said co-worker Patricia Kenney, who nominated Varone. "She consistently demonstrates an ongoing professional and personal commitment to the understanding of and respect for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and applies her knowledge both in the workplace and in social situations."

"What we appreciate about Kathy is that she never fails to sign in the presence of deaf people at functions inside and outside of NTID/RIT," said Keith Mousley, an assistant professor of science and math at NTID and member of the DPG. "Her interaction is a model for other faculty and staff members to follow."

Varone was honored at a celebration with past Award of Excellence winners at NTID's Dyer Arts Center. NTID is the first and largest technological college in the world for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. NTID, one of eight colleges of RIT, offers educational programs and access and support services to its 1,100 students from around the world who study, live and socialize with 14,000 hearing students on RIT's Rochester, N.Y., campus.
