Cassandra Leszczynski is like any other 10-year-old -- she loves to dance, takes drum lessons and plays soccer.
Those are activities that would have been harder had she not received a cochlear implant in her left ear four years ago.
"The effect has been incredible," said her mom, Cathy, noting great strides have been made in hearing technology.
But for those improvements to happen, awareness and money needs to be raised, and a perfect opportunity for that happens this weekend.
The Walk, Run and Roll event Saturday morning at North Glenmore Park features an 8-km run or a 5-km family-friendly distance.
The Hearing Foundation of Canada is organizing the event, with proceeds -- they hope at least $8,00 -- going to services for people who are hearing impaired.
"We've made some great strides in our research -- we've improved by leaps and bounds," said Charlene Watson, an audiologist with the Calgary Health Region and the University of Calgary.
To register for the Walk, Run and Roll for hearing research visit the Kensington Running Room online at www.runningroom.com or call the Hearing Foundation of Canada at 210-3656.
