Captioning boosts access to more TV shows

The number of television programs with captioning for deaf viewers will increase under a new agreement.

The deal says half of all television programs shown between 6:00am and midnight will be captioned from 2005.

That number will increase to 70 per cent by the end of 2007.

The change follows talks involving the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, organisations representing deaf and hearing-impaired people and television broadcasters.
