Lawmakers Say Deaf School Move Illegal
From: KARK, AR - Jul 3, 2003
Story by The Associated Press
Some legislators say the board that oversees the Arkansas School for the Blind and School for the Deaf has broken state law.
Trustees for the schools last month asked Deaf School Superintendent Sandra Lunestad to step down. The board then appointed Jim Hill, who leads the Blind School, to lead both schools. Board members said the move would save money.
But some say the move violates state law. And a letter from an assistant attorney general backs that opinion. The letter says having one superintendent for both schools seems to be prohibited by state law and the Arkansas Constitution.
A formal attorney general's opinion is pending.
