From: Oyster Bay Enterprise Pilot, NY - Jul 18, 2003
The Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf track team recently traveled to Providence, Rhode Island for the 2003 Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA) Track and Field Tournament. Hosted at Rhode Island School for the Deaf, the tournament was held on May 15 and 16.
Fifteen Mill Neck Manor athletes traveled to the 45-mile wide state to compete in a variety of activities. Mill Neck Manor students placed well in many events. James Edwards came in fourth place (out of 21) in the discus throw and in fifth place (out of 18) in the Shot Put event. In her first time participating in the event, Avianca Whitfield came in sixth place (out of 9) in the girls' 200 meter dash. "She has the potential to earn a better ranking in the future," Coach Rob Saccente said.
Charmaine Konoski's shot put effort was also notable, earning her seventh place (out of 17).
Mill Neck Manor has been participating in the ESDAA Track Tournament for over 10 years. The team has many young players, and Saccente said that going to the tournament has "built up their self-confidence, self-esteem and commitment to the sports program at Mill Neck."
