From: Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil, IA - Sept 8, 2003
DELAVAN, Wis. - Iowa School for the Deaf escaped with a 34-32 victory over Wisconsin School for the Deaf Saturday.
The Bobcats were cruising until the fourth quarter, when injuries caused players to play out of position.
In the fourth, with a lead of 34-26, Iowa Deaf was at the Firebird nine-yard line looking to put the game on ice.
With 2:47 left on the clock the Bobcats lost a fumble and were forced to sweat it out.
Wisconsin Deaf scored on a 56-yard pass and converted for two to pull within two points. After forcing a Bobcat punt, the Firebirds drove back down field and were at the Iowa Deaf nine when the clock hit all zeros.
Despite the late collapse, it was a very good day offensively for the Bobcats.
David Arteaga had nine carries for 72 yards, including a scamper of 25 to give Iowa Deaf their first score.
Eric Humlicek rushed 22 times for 193 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 30 and 4 yards in the second quarter.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Moises Arteaga, David's brother, had touchdown runs of one and two yards.
Leading the way on defense for the Bobcats were Eldin Dorn (14 tackles, one sack) Jordan Borgaila (12 tackles, one sack), and Humleick, who had 12 tackles.
Coach Mark Murray noted that the coaching staff was very pleased with the play of sophomore Mac Weyers, who played well in his first starts at defensive tackle and offensive guard.
