Have you ever tried to lip read Spiderman?

Millions of people in the UK use subtitles on TV, DVD and video to enjoy
movies. Now cinema has become accessible too. Subtitled and audio described
cinema enables people with less than perfect hearing or vision to enjoy
film, presented in its original, and best form - the cinema.

You can find us wherever there is internet access - at home, the workplace,
school, a library, an internet cafe, the many thousands of BT internet
kiosks throughout the UK etc. Half of UK households have internet access now
so there's really no excuse not to know what subtitled movies are out there!

But to be notified of new subtitled films, dates & times in your area every
week, just reply to this mail and say "Tell ME!"

Know someone who would appreciate this info? Tell them! Forward this email

PLEASE READ THIS!
Subtitles @ Your Local Cinema receive subtitled listings information
directly from cinema head offices, but we can take NO responsibility for
postponed or cancelled shows. If cinemas inform us of changes, we will tell
you via the website. If they don't inform us, we can't inform you.

Many cinemas schedules are "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION".
Sometimes a subtitled film is not delivered to the cinema on time and cannot
be screened.

The only way to be 100% sure is to ALWAYS check with the ACTUAL cinema
before you plan a visit. But DOUBLE check, preferably with a manager. NEVER
turn up without getting confirmation that a show is definitely on.

We are expecting many subtitled films this year including:
Finding Nemo, The Italian Job and many more.

Over 90 films have been released in the past few years with cinema subtitles
and/or audio description. The vast majority of them can only be screened in
'digital subtitle' equipped cinemas, of which there are currently only 22 in
the UK.

"Think of it like 98% of cinemas having a VCR player, and 2% having a DVD
player, but new films are only available subtitled on DVD!"

Please ask your nearest accessible cinema to screen them!
Locations and available films here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com

Subtitled films available include:
Tomb Raider 2
Jeepers Creepers 2
American Pie 3: the Wedding
Pirates of the Caribbean
Terminator 3

Legally Blonde 2
Spy Kids 3D

Many people have been enquiring as to what exactly is going on with UK
subtitled cinema:

"Why do we have to travel 50 miles to catch one?"
"Why do we have to wait months after release date?"
"Why do films usually only play once?"

Let us explain...

An estimated 5 million people in the UK use subtitles to enjoy films and
although subtitles are the norm on TV, DVD and video, silent movies are
still the norm at the cinema, but without the old captions that helped to
explain the plot.

Deaf people are generally excluded from the popular social activity of
cinemagoing.

Almost all popular films ARE released in a subtitled version, but they are
usually 'digitally subtitled only' which means that they are incompatible
with 98% of UK cinemas.

So for the time being, the vast majority of the latest subtitled releases
won't be screened nationwide, as only 22 cinemas in the UK can screen them -
cinemas with a digital subtitle system.

It is hoped that these 'accessible' cinemas will utilise their 'access'
systems as much as possible. Ideally, these 22 cinemas would show one or
more different subtitled films every week, with at least one daytime and
evening show through the week, and a couple of daytime and evening weekend
shows. Three or four shows a week might just make deaf people feel welcome
AND improve the audience figures for subtitled shows. Not a lot to request!

We cannot 'force' a cinema to enable deaf people to enjoy their services, we
can only ask them to. And we do, constantly. It's our job to create
awareness of the problem, suggest solutions, and to empower people to do
something about it

We recommend that people contact cinemas in their area and request that
their services are made available to deaf and hard of hearing people.

Remind the cinema how many films are available to them and ask for films to
be shown. All cinemas can screen the films below, and more, with subtitles.
These have been produced in the 'older' form of cinema subtitling - the
subtitles are embedded in the actual film that is supplied to the cinema
('hard' subtitles). Cinemas just need to hire them from the relevant
distributor, as they do with 'normal' films.

Films available to every UK cinema include Matrix Reloaded, X-Men 2,
Daredevil, James Bond: Die Another Day, Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets and more.

A full list of every subtitled mainstream film available to regular and
'digital' cinemas (over 90 to date, including most popular ones), and
locations of cinemas with a digital subtitle system are available on the
website: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Digital Cinema Subtitles

22 cinemas in the UK have been equipped with a new 'access' system.

Once these cinemas have the subtitle 'files', they can overlay subtitles
onto the latest films. They don't need a 'special' subtitled print. The
system can be turned on and off - similar to teletext subtitles on TV, so
the screen can be used for non-subtitled shows too.

The system can also broadcast audio description, for visually impaired
people. The on-screen action is described in detail through personal
headphones. This feature has no affect on an audience's enjoyment of a film
and can be left 'on' all of the time. Every show can be an audio described
show.

To date over 90 films have been released with subtitles and description for
this system and if all goes to plan, from now on, most major films will be
released with subtitle and description 'files' (the files are supplied to
the cinema on disc, separate to the actual film).

Studios and distributors obviously prefer the cheaper, digital solution to
subtitling, which creates a problem - although subtitled and described, most
films are still inaccessible to the vast majority of the people that they
are aimed at - hearing or visually impaired people in the UK.

There needs to be a lot more cinemas with digital subtitle facilities to
cater for the many people who now expect major releases to be subtitled.
(Almost 100 cinemas in the US and Canada have a digital subtitle system,
based on the exact same system as here in the UK. and the number is steadily
growing).

So to cater for the large amount of accessible films available, and on the
way, this year the cinema industry plan to make many more of their cinemas
accessible to people with hearing or visual impairments.

Each 'access' system costs less than an average cinemas weekend takings on
one film. Lottery funding (via the Film Council) has been offered to fund
50% of the total cost (over £1 million) and it is planned that around 100
cinemas will become accessible.

Locations have yet to be decided but are planned to be spread widely around
the country, so as many people as possible can catch accessible shows.

So that should eliminate the problem of having to travel 50 miles or more to
catch the latest film. It should also eliminate the problem of having to
wait months for a film to come to a cinema near your town, as every cinema
with the system installed will be able to show the subtitled version when
they please. The system is likely to be installed in only ONE screen of a
multi-screen multiplex and therefore would not interfere too much with
'normal' non-subtitled shows.

It is hoped that these 'accessible' cinemas will utilise their 'access'
systems as much as possible. Ideally, these cinemas would show one or more
different subtitled films every week, with at least one daytime and evening
show through the week, and a couple of daytime and evening weekend shows.

This would vastly improve on the 'old' subtitling system in which a couple
of subtitled film prints were 'toured' around cinemas, resulting in some
cinemas having to screen a Christmas movie the following February. That
'touring' problem was also the reason why a subtitled film usually only
played for one day only - it had to be delivered the next day, to the next
cinema down the line. The new system would enable many cinemas to screen a
subtitled show many times, over many weeks, at popular times,
simultaneously.

We hope that explains the situation! Any queries, please don't hesitate to
contact us.
