Avon Kindergarten celebrates Deaf Awareness Week

From: Avon Sentinel, IL - Oct 30, 2003

Sept. 21-27 was Deaf Awareness Week. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is an international organization composed of 120 national associations of the deaf which serves all countries in the enhancement of the social, economic, and cultural lives of deaf and hard of hearing people. The WFD initiated Deaf Awareness Week, which is held annually during the last full week of September to celebrate the culture, heritage, and language unique to deaf people all around the world. In honor of Deaf Awareness week, Miss Kestner, Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing at Avon High School, and David Sharp, a freshman at AHS, visited the two Kindergarten classes on Friday, Sept. 26 to teach sign language to the students. They learned the alphabet, numbers, colors, and animals. Each student was given a copy of the signs to practice at home. They all enjoyed learning a new language of talking with their hands!
