MOTION PICTURE ACCESS (MoPix) NEWS
Week of Nov 21-27
ACCESS TO MOVIES IN A DIGITAL CINEMA WORLD
The film industry is undergoing a revolution of sorts. New digital technologies are about to transform the process and the equipment used in production, recording, distribution, storage, management and display of motion pictures. Yet, there are currently no provisions for captions or descriptions in the industry's evolving digital cinema standards. But never fear... WGBH is here (smile). We have been following the development of digital cinema (or "D-cinema") for some time, and we are pleased to announce that we have been awarded funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, U.S. Department of Education to continue efforts to integrate access features into digital cinema systems. This project will "pave the highway"-- that is endeavor to make the distribution chain for feature films inclusive of current and future technologies for caption and description delivery and display. Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical will remain robust long into the conversion to D-cinema. And we anticipate audiences and theater managers will eventually have a number of devices to choose from (prototypes include captions displayed on personal digital assistants/PDA's, captioning "glasses" or open captions on demand and at theater management discretion...) as access via captioning and description becomes just another part of the film-going experience.
WGBH will be working with a number of organizations to realize this goal, including our partners at the Hollywood studios, theater chains committed to welcoming all patrons, industry standards organizations, technology vendors and consumers with disabilities. All of these groups are invested, as are we, in making film-going an equal access pastime now and into the future.

ROADMAP TO MOVIE ACCESS + ONE MORE STORY
Read an interview with Omaha's star advocate Bob Burns who raised half the money for a MoPix installation (AMC Theatres matched the funds), available in text online at the MoPix site: http://ncam.wgbh.org/mopix/roadmap.html
Here's an article about a protégé of Bob's who is working the advocacy magic with a new chain, Douglas Theatres, also in Nebraska... http://www.journalstar.com/local.php?story_id=95308
