(November 5, 2003) — State Park Police are trying to determine what caused the death Sunday in the Southern Tier of a student from Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Jerry Hopkins, 36, a freshman studying applied computer technology, died at Allegany State Park.
The incident is being investigated by the Park Police’s Salamanca office.
Hopkins reportedly was at the park with several fellow members of Kappa Phi Theta, a fraternity for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to Jerry’s family and friends,” RIT spokesman Bob Finnerty said. Determining the cause of death could take several weeks, pending toxicology test results, Finnerty said.
