RIT fraternity suspended following death of student

From: WHEC-TV, NY - Nov 5, 2003

There are new developments in the death of an RIT student. NEWS 10NBC has learned that the school has suspended the Kappa Phi Theta fraternity pending the outcome of the investigation.

About a dozen members of the fraternity, made up primarily of deaf students, were staying at a cabin at Allegany State Park over the weekend. 36-year-old Jerry Hopkins never woke up Sunday morning and died on the way to a hospital in Pennsylvania.

An RIT spokesperson says the fraternity did not follow school procedure, which requires authorization for off-campus group events.

New York State Park Police are waiting for toxicology reports to determine Hopkins' cause of death.
