Normally we only profile high school players for the weekly Getting to Know segment. But Katy Larson is a special case.

Larson played at North Side through her junior year before transferring to the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Maryland and a branch of Gallaudet. Larson is now playing softball in Washington D.C. at Gallaudet and a sophomore.

We kicked the normal phone interview to the curb and instead I sent questions through AOL's Instant Messenger program. And she responded back using her T-Mobile sidekick.

What follows is a transcript of our conversation ...

So how is Washington D.C.: Well it's interesting. That's all I can really say, *laughs*

What's your favorite thing about life there: How I would learn something new about history wherever I go.

What do you miss about Jackson: the slow pace of life back at home and Latham's Meat Co. food.

What's your favorite class in college: criminal justice.

Where is the best place you've played: York, Pa. It had the nicest field and made me feel like I was playing in the pros.

Who has been the best player you played against: hmm... well I don't know much of the players here...oops

Favorite moment in college: making the starting position as a catcher for the softball team.

Nickname: Ms. Rocket due to my arm for throwing runners out at 2nd when they steal.

My idea of a great game: My gunning down runners stealing 2nd base, errorless throughout the entire game, and nonstop hitting.

Favorite college team: UT Lady Vols

Favorite pro team: Atlanta Braves

Favorite pro athlete: Javy Lopez

Why: Cuz he got the arm, hitting, and makes the catching position look so easy.

What famous person would you like to eat lunch with: John Smoltz

Favorite food: Biscuits and gravy!

Favorite movie: whew...got tons of favorite movies...gotta have to say

''A League of their Own'' and ''Mary Poppins'' *giggles*

Favorite TV show: Law and Order: SUV special victim's unit, ER and

Animal Cops from Animal Planet.

How would you describe yourself: Very laid-back, smart, quite, observer, sweet, funny/smart aleck.

Future plans: travel around the world, play in the Olympics for softball, major in either deaf education with PE and English major or Criminal Justice and be happy for the rest of my life.

Favorite video game: don't play video games

Favorite shoe: FLIP FLOPS! Also my birkenstock sandals too.

What piece of technology could you not live without: *laughs* since I'm

replying back to you with these answers on my tmoblie sidekick pager. That's one technology I cannot survive without.

What is something that most people don't know about you: that I love working on cars and dream of fixing up an old beat-up car to make it as a weekend toy for me.
