What is happening in the Southern California area for June, 2004? Many, many events, and many of them are accessible to deaf and/or hard of hearing people. Here are the HLO-recommended events in Southern California for June, 2004.

**** 22ND ANNUAL SALUTE TO RECREATION FAMILY FESTIVAL: Friday, June 4 (6 pm-10:30 pm); SATURDAY, JUNE 5 (10 am - 10:30 pm); Sunday, June 6 (10 am - 9 pm). The largest annual Department of Recreation and Parks event in the San Fernando Valley. PLENTY of activities for the whole family, includinga children's area, petting zoo, carnival rides, games, food booths, International Village, Hawaiian Village, arts and crafts boutique, Teen Night and entertainment on four stages, WITH A FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA ON SATURDAY NIGHT, JUNE 5 !!


Saturday June 5- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Gathering at the Coffee Bean at the Grove/ Farmers Market, Los Angeles on Fairfax and 3rd Street- 7pm-11pm. Plenty of restaurants to choose at Farmers Market but be sure to go there before they close at 9pm. Many other restaurants remain open after 9 at the Grove area.

Saturday June 5th- DHH Gathering at Starbucks Coffee, 3429 Foothill Blvd, Pasadena, CA.

** IT'S A SORO WORLD FESTIVAL; Sunday, June 6 (11 am - 5 pm). South Robertson area of Los Angeles. Featuring music, entertainment, arts and crafts, games, rides for children, and Kosher, Egyptian, French, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Vegetarian food booths. See the website at http://www.soro.org

** FOOD, WINE AND MICRO-BREW FESTIVAL: June 10, 5 pm-9 pm, Westfield Mall, Woodland Hills. Fundraiser for the Valley Cultural Center, with the ultimate in dining from restaurants, wineries and micro-breweries. Admission: $30.00. See the website at http://www.valleycultural.net

Thursday June 10- DHH Gathering at Roundtable Pizza, 4330 Redondo Beach Blvd, Torrance, CA. 6-9pm

Saturday June 12- DHH Coffee Gathering at Java and Jazz Coffee, 24300 Town Center Drive, Valencia, CA 91355. 7-11pm

Wednesday June 16- Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, 24415 Town Center Dr, Valencia, CA. 7-10pm. A DHH Gathering.

Thursday June 17- DHH Pizza at Vince's Pizza on 25th Street East and Avenue S in East Palmdale, CA 93550. A nice place where you can also watch two TV with closed captioning. 5pm- 9pm.

Friday June 18- DHH Gathering at Starbucks Coffee, 19758 Rinaldi Street, Northridge, CA 91326. VERY POPULAR EVENT SO DO NOT MISS IT !!!! 7pm to Closing.

** JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION: June 19, 10 am-10 pm, Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Long Beach. June 19 is the 138th Anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the African-American slaves in the United States, and led to the Civil Rights that many people enjoy today, including people with disabilities. **** VERY UNIQUE AND INTERESTING!! 6TH ANNUAL CAPOEIRA FESTIVAL, June 21-26 (call (323) 935-2224 or see the website at http://www.capoeirabrasil.com). Have you ever heard of Capoeira? It is a unique martial art, originally from Africa, which developed in Brazil. It combines circular and straight kicks, acrobatics, takedowns, creativity, and spirituality. Masters from all over the world will be giving lectures and workshops. There will also be a music competition, and a Bautizado graduation ceremony on June 26. Bencao Brasil Cultural Center, 5557 Washington Blvd., Los Angeles.

***** QUEEN MARY LONG BEACH BAYOU FESTIVAL: June 25-27 (noon to 8 pm each day): For the past 16 years, this event has given the BEST family entertainment. Sunday June 27- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Beach Party, Santa Monica Beach, Lifeguard Station #26. 10am until Sunset. Bring volleyball as we can play volleyball on the beach.
Near Ocean Park Blvd by the ocean. Parking for a fee at the parking lot on the beach.

1.) DANCE CAMERA WEST INTERNATIONAL DANCE FILM FESTIVAL: If you like dance, there is a month-long festival of film screenings and events, featuring experimental short films, docmentaries and feature films at locations around Los Angeles, with a special outdoor event called "Outside the Edges." 2.) NATIONAL GAY PRIDE MONTH: A citywide celebration in Los Angeles acknowledging Southern California's gay and lesbian contributions int he areas of education, politics, the arts, culture and the humanities. 3.) JOHN ANSON FORD AMPHITHEATRE 2004 SEASON: Jazz, world music, dance, classical music, theatre, film, choral events and family shows at a 1,200 seat outdoor amphitheatre (it's close to the Hollywood Bowl). See the website at http://www.fordamphitheatre.org

4.) JAPANESE OUTLAW MASTERS FILM FESTIVAL: Japanese films have become very popular in the USA, and Japanese films are now stronger than ever. [NOTE: MANY OF THESE FILMS ARE SUBTITLED/CAPTIONED]. See the website at http://www.egyptiantheatre.com

5.) MODS AND ROCKERS FILM FESTIVAL: For those who loved the 1960s, this film festival provides smiles and happy memories of the grooviest decade of the grooviest century. See the website at http://www.egyptiantheatre.com

6.) CONCERTS IN THE PARK: The Valley Cultural Center in Woodland Hills has free concerts during the summer, every Sunday afternoon. See the website at http://www.valleycultural.org

7.) THE IFP LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL: This festival shows the best American AND INTERNATIONAL [NOTE: MANY ARE SUBTITLED/CAPTIONED] independent films, with over 100 screenings. See the website at http://www.lafilmfest.com

June 18-20.... 34th LGBT Parade and Festival in West Hollywood

This celebration is a unifying force that provides the resources to promote and accomplish the goals of human rights, education, outreach, and better understanding within the LGBT community as well as the non-lgbt community.

Festival Admission- Discounted tickets for people with disabilities and people under 18 or over 65 are available in advance at the CSW office (323) 969-8302, or on the day of the event at the special ticket sales window ( ID will be required) For pre- sale ticket locations go to the website to find a location near you. www.lapride.org

There will be more than 300 exhibitors at the festival. Parade will be on Sunday June 20 and it is one of the largest parades in California so plan to arrive early. Starting time for the Parade is 11am beginning at Santa Monica Blvd and Crescent Heights in West Hollywood. Deaf and Hard of hearing will concentrate near the Mickey's Club on Santa Monica Blvd during the Parade.

During the Festival deaf and hard of hearing will meet where the Interpreters are located at the Main Stage but we will also meet at the Abbey's on Robertson between Santa Monica Blvd and Melrose if not inside the festival grounds. Interpreters will be available for the deaf and hard of hearing near the MAIN STAGE of the festival site. Interpreters can be requested for all areas of the festival with staged performances including Erotic City. the R and R area, Latin Carnival, and the Main Stage.

Club Freedom, an alcohol, tobacco, and drug FREE event will be held on Friday June 18 at West Hollywood Park from 9pm until 1am . FREE ADMISSION. Deaf and Hard of Hearing Party- Saturday July 10 at 9pm.
Pre-screeening Reception at Directors Guild of America Atrium ( All welcome). The American film will be soft-titled ( captioned) for the deaf and hard of hearing at 9:30pm.

Every screening of a foreign-language subtitled film at Outfest 2004 will be accompained by ASL interpretation of the program introduction and any post-screening question and answer session.
