18 local students selected for leadership program

Eighteen sophomores, juniors and seniors at Boyle County and Danville high schools and Kentucky School for the Deaf have been selected for membership in the Youth Leadership Danville-Boyle County Class of 2004-05.

The program, sponsored by the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce and a spinoff of the chamber's leadership program for adults that was begun in 1983, was started in 1996 and held every other year since then.

The program, which also is supported by Atmos Energy and other local companies, offers top students from the three local high schools an opportunity to learn first-hand about the inner-workings of government and various not-for-profit agencies.

The schedule for the new class starts with a leadership development orientation program Sept. 14 and then includes studies of local and global economics on Oct. 5; local government and justice systems on Nov. 9; health and human services on Jan. 11; arts and lifestyles on Feb. 8; and graduation on March 8.

Here are the members of the Class of 2004-5:

Boyle County High School: Taggart Jefferson and Sarah Hall, sophomores; Amber Mills, junior; John Frauenhoffer, Jessica McQuerry and Melinda Moyo, seniors.

Danville High School: Caroline Crowley, Courtney Givens, McKenzie McAfee and James Witten, sophomores; Eric Caldwell and Jared Smith, juniors; Allen Belcher, Claire Caudill and Mauricus Lofton, seniors.

Kentucky School for the Deaf: Michael Harrell, Joshua Huffman and Amos Reid, seniors.
