Hearing Impaired Rapist Remanded

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 29-year-old local mute and with impaired hearing yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge, explained by a sign language interpreter, of raping a 42-year-old woman.

Mujah Hj Yaakob was sent for remand at the Jerudong Prison pending sentencing on July 17 this year for the court to get a psychiatric report on the rape victim from the RIPAS Hospital and consider the sentence for the defendant.

In the High Court before Dato Paduka Judge Steven Chong, Deputy Public Prosecutor Pg Nina Jasmine Pg Hj Bahrin preferred the charge against the defendant of having raped the woman in Kg Lamunin Barat Tutong on May 18 last year at about 4.30 pm and committing hurt against her in doing so.

Penalty for the offence carries an imprisonment term of not less than 8 years and not exceeding 30 years and whipping with not less than 12 strokes. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
