National statistics show that one in three seniors age 65 or older have some degree of hearing loss.

If you are among this group, you are eligible for a free text or amplified telephone from the state. In addition, people who have speech difficulties are eligible for free specialized telephone equipment, as well.

The Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) in Phoenix administers the telephone program through their Arizona Telephone Equipment Distribution Program (AZTEDP) located at 1400 W. Washington in Phoenix. The Community Outreach Program for the Deaf (COPD) in Tucson contracted with ACDHH recently to do outreach in the southern part of the state.

The Safford, Thatcher, Pima, Clifton and Morenci areas are in the Southern Region served by COPD. A representative is coming to the Gila Valley area to give a presentation and assist with applications on Monday, Aug. 16 at Infinia Health Care, 1933 Peppertree Drive, Safford, from 7-8 p.m.

If you will be attending and have need of an ASL interpreter, please call our Interpreting Department at 1-800-623-0344 no later than Wednesday, Aug. 4, to schedule.
