Carjack leads to police chase

From: York Dispatch, PA - Sep 13, 2004

Police apprehended a man they say unsuccessfully tried to carjack one woman, carjacked another and then led police on a chase through several jurisdictions, ending when he crashed on Route 74 in York Township.

Gary Ensor, 38, of 1310 Conewago Ave. in Newberry Township is in York County Prison on $100,000 bail, charged with three counts of aggravated assault, robbery, attempted robbery, reckless endangerment, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving and possession of paraphernalia.

York City Police said Ensor, wielding a knife, tried to carjack Jodi Sciortino of York in the 200 block of South George Street at 2:41 p.m. Saturday, but took off after she resisted. Six minutes later, police allege, Ensor carjacked Jennifer Smeach of York in the 100 block of North Queen Street, taking off in her Saturn.

As he fled, he drove into a witness trying to stop him, injuring that person's arm, police said.

Just before 4 p.m., police spotted the stolen Saturn and gave chase.

Police said that at one point during the chase, Ensor rammed a city cruiser. The two officers inside, Allen Henty and Lisa Daniels, escaped injury.

The chase led police south through the city's downtown area and onto Interstate 83, with officers from York Area Regional and Spring Garden Township police assisting, as did state troopers.

The chase ended on Route 74 at Honey Valley Road, when Ensor crashed into a curb, police said.
