Electrical and Magnetic Neurostimulation to Double by 2008
From: PR Newswire (press release) - Sep 14, 2004
NEW YORK, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The $3.5 billion North American market for electrical and magnetic neurostimulation devices will more than double by 2008 to almost $7.7 billion, according to a new study released today from Kalorama Information. Some segments will show phenomenal growth, upwards of 50% annually.
The new study, "Electrical and Magnetic Nerve Stimulation: Applications, Technologies, and Market Potential," reveals that neurostrimulation, or neuromodulation, will continue to find applications across the therapeutic spectrum, from traditional markets such as electromuscular stimulation (EMS) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain management to newer areas such as neuroprosthesis and functional electrostimulation (FES) for restoration of muscular or sensory function or techniques to treat depression and seizure disorders.
"Several high-profile systems are now passing through approval stages," notes James P. Smith, Ph.D., the principal author of the study, "and the potential of this market has clearly caught the eye of pharmaceutical and microelectronics companies, which are actively expanding their stake in electrode therapeutics through research, collaborations, and acquisitions."
"These actions will push more applications into the marketplace, and medical insurance will recognize a long-term savings for electronic treatment of chronic and debilitating conditions," predicts Dr. Smith. "Combined with new telemedicine strategies, implanted sensors, and drug delivery systems, electrical and magnetic neurostimulation can usher in a new wave of care for the chronically ill."
The study analyzes nine market segments in depth, including TENS, EMS, FES, sacral nerve stimulation (SNS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), spinal cord stimulation (SCS), cochlear implants, and ocular implants. Research and business trends along with profiles of almost 50 competitors and a complete list of recent relevant patent filings.
