Mountainair's varsity football team took its second game in a row on the 45-point rule by downing the New Mexico School for the Deaf 66-21 on Sept. 16 in Santa Fe.

While holding their opponent to two scores in the first half, the Mustangs delivered three touchdowns in each quarter for a halftime score of 44-15.

While allowing one more score in the third quarter, the Mustangs poured it on with three scores to end the game with one minute remaining in the quarter.

Daniel Sanchez led the Mustangs with four touchdowns and 189 rushing yards. Chris Romero and Josh Archuleta each ran for two touchdowns.

Archuleta had 142 receiving yards, ran back a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns and blocked a punt on the opponent's 20-yard line.

Mathew Chavez contributed one touchdown, kicked all the Mustangs' extra points and made 10 tackles. Gabe Romero added eight tackles.

"Overall we did well," said coach Robert Zamora. "We need to concentrate on our blocking and tackling. We still need a lot of work to be one of the top two in our district in order to make it to playoffs. So far everyone has stayed healthy and we are peaking at just the right time. We should be at our best when playoffs start."

The Mustangs have three more district games, starting with Roy on Saturday at home. The junior high kickoff is at 11 a.m. with the varsity game at 1:30 p.m.
