Regal Entertainment Group to Aggressively Defend New Jersey Attorney General Discrimination Suit

From: Business Wire (press release), CA - Sept 16, 2004

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2004--Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE:RGC) ("Regal") was notified today that NJ Attorney General, Peter C. Harvey, has filed a lawsuit alleging that Regal discriminates against the deaf and hard of hearing by not agreeing to install closed captioning equipment in its New Jersey theatres. Regal has historically advocated showing open captioned films, which displays a film's dialogue on the movie screen, rather than utilizing other technologies, such as "rear window" devices, which require the moviegoer to view a film's dialogue on a separate screen. Randy Smith, Senior Vice President, Human Resources Counsel, said "Regal Entertainment Group is a leader in showing open captioned films throughout the United States and in New Jersey. Regal has chosen to offer open caption films because open captioning is preferred by most of the deaf and hard of hearing community instead of utilizing the rear window device." Mr. Smith further commented, "Regal will continue to provide movies in the format the deaf and hard of hearing community desire and will continue to aggressively lobby for more film product to be produced in that format."

For years Regal has shown open captioned films in New Jersey and recently began showing them at every facility Regal operates in the state. Regal's efforts have been recognized by many deaf and hard of hearing patrons and even local government officials for their efforts to make the movie going experience accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing community. For example, Insight Cinemas, a non-profit organization which is the largest provider of open captioned films in the U.S., today issued a press release supporting Regal's position. The New Jersey Attorney General's suit against Regal lacks merit and will be aggressively defended.

Members of the deaf and hard of hearing community who are interested in attending screenings of open captioned movies are encouraged to visit Regal's website, www.REGmovies.com, for a comprehensive listing of the show times of all open caption films that Regal exhibits throughout the United States.
