MoPix Update from WGBH- Sept 17-23

NEW JERSEY THEATERS TO EXPAND ACCESS TO FILMS
AMC Theaters, Clearview Cinemas, Loews Cineplex and National Amusements Theaters in New Jersey will install Rear Window Captioning in at least one auditorium in each of their movie theater complexes in the state. This is a result of negotiations between the theater chains and the state's Attorney General, Peter Harvey, who seeks to improve access for NJ's citizens who are deaf and hard of hearing. The theater chains were asked to make films accessible during the most popular showtimes, including all shows on weekends. The chains could choose a closed captioned system (WGBH's Rear Window Captioning) or an open caption projection system (which projects captions on the screen for the entire audience to see). The chains chose the Rear Window system.

AMC, Clearview and National Amusements also plan to install DVS Theatrical, the system which makes films accessible to patrons who are blind or have low vision (Loews has no current plan to install DVS systems in NJ). These agreements, announced on Wednesday, September 15, will result in a total of 34 accessible theater locations in the state (today, there are three accessible theaters in NJ). Most will be installed and running within 90 days. The agreement also covers improvements in notifying patrons about accessible screenings via mainstream advertisements, as well as improved signage at theaters and training of staff on use of the systems.

The fifth major theatre chain with properties in New Jersey, Regal Cinemas, did not agree to install movie access systems (either Rear Window or open caption projection systems) in its thirteen NJ theaters. The Attorney General announced a complaint against Regal for failing to comply with the state's antidiscrimination laws.
