All-star cast for Amashova cycle race

From: Business Day, South Africa, South Africa - Oct 11, 2004

The country's fastest growing cycle race, the Amashovashova National Classic, is turning into something of an Olympic debriefing.

Not only is Athens bronze medal rower Donovan Cech taking part on a tandem partnered by Robert Hunter but now Athens Olympian and Sydney 200m breast stroke silver medal swimmer Terence Parkin has also entered individually.

Parkin, who turns 24 just four days after the race, is not only an Olympic silver medallist but also won silver at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and has set his sights on more success at both the 2005 Deaf Olympics and the World Championships, as well as at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The Durban-based Zimbabwe-born Parkin is deaf, and is well known for his work among those with hearing deficiencies.

His latest effort involves the foundation of a swimming academy for the deaf and hearing-impaired, and is just one more example of the very positive way in which he has dealt with the disability.

There can be few better teachers about the true meaning and benefits of sport, and Parkin's participation is yet another sporting feather in the Amashova's cycling cap.

The race takes place on Sunday, October 31.
