Man convicted in rape of deaf teenager

MILFORD, Conn. -- A Stratford man has been convicted of raping his former girlfriend's 13-year-old deaf daughter.

Eugene Cromety, 35, was found guilty Thursday of first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.

"This is truly a case where the jury has spoken for a victim who could not speak for herself," State's Attorney Mary Galvin said. "It shows that people who think they can victimize the weak and get away with it are sadly mistaken."

The sexual assaults occurred in her mother's bedroom in Ansonia. Authorities said Cromety assaulted the victim on three separate occasions.

The girl testified with the aid of two sign-language interpreters.

Cromety is facing a maximum of 30 years in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 16.
