From: News Today - India - Jan 31, 2005

NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 31:

Cochlear-implanted children are not special children, according to cochlear implant surgeon Dr Mohan Kameswaran.

Speaking at a function organised by Madras ENT Research Foundation

(MERF) in Chennai yesterday, Dr Mohan said cochlear implanted children were normal children and can be given admissions in educational institutions. He said awareness on cochlear implants was lacking at a time when the need for such implants in the country were expected to increase.

Over 100 hearing-impaired children who had received Nucleus Cochlear Implantation (NCI) along with their families gathered at the function to express their gratitude to Dr Mohan for his successful implant surgeries. Speaking on the occasion, Karpaga, the mother of Pari, an NCI, said admission to schools had become major problem for NCI children and educators should have a concern for such children.

The event also showcased some cultural programmes performed by NCI children on the occasion.
