Games events sell out

VICTORIA is embracing the 20th Deaflympics.

Day passes to yesterday's Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre events -- including basketball, handball, volleyball and swimming -- sold out.

An additional 300 daily tickets to the centre will be released.

"Games organisers are really thrilled with the public response," Deaflympics spokeswoman Susan Wright said.

In highlights yesterday, Italy defeated Turkey 2-1 in the men's soccer at Cheltenham and a Swiss tenpin bowler scored a perfect round at Sunshine.

Barcelona Olympian Dean Barton-Smith has won Australia's only medal so far -- a silver in the shot put. He is hoping for a strong challenge in the discus.

The games finish next Sunday.
