Glover ready for the Games
From: Bendigo Advertiser, Australia - Jan 3, 2005
BRYCE Glover's quest for gold at the Deaflympics will begin on Saturday at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The 18-year-old Bendigo Senior Secondary College student has a busy schedule ahead of him as he prepares to compete in the 50 m, 100 m and 200 m breast-stroke, while he will also swim the breaststroke legs in the 4 x 50 m and 4 x 100 m medley relays.
Glover's best chance for a gold medal appears to be in the 50 m medley, where he has swam times that are just 2.5 seconds behind some of Australia's Olympic swimmers.
Glover has been a member of the Eaglehawk YMCA Swimming Club for the past three years and qualified for the Deaflympics after trials in April, last year.
The 20th Deaflympics will be held in Melbourne from January 5 to 16.
The Deaflympics, under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee, are the world's second-oldest multi-sport and cultural festival and have a proud history since they began in Paris in 1924.
More than 3500 athletes and team officials are expected to attend and participate in 15 individual and team events at the Games.
The opening ceremony will be held at Olympic Park on Wednesday night.
