ALTHOUGH Melbourne is unassailed in its position as Australia's sporting capital the depth of our obsession with sport never ceases to amaze.

Ticket sales for the 20th Deaflympics have exceeded all expectations with sports fans packing the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and other venues.

The Deaflympics are second only to the Olympics as the world's oldest multi-sport event and organisers are thrilled with the response from the Victorian public.

It bodes well for the level of support we can expect for the coming Commonwealth Games, just over a year away.
