Volleyball: USA Women to Play for Bronze Medal at 2005 Deaflympics; USA Men Finish 8th

MELBOURNE, Australia – The USA women's indoor volleyball team competing at the 2005 Deaflympics will play Italy for the bronze medal on Thursday, Jan. 13.
The Americans lost in the semifinals of the tournament to second-seeded Japan, 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25) on Tuesday after advancing to the final rounds as the No. 3 team in the pool with a 3-2 record.
Thursday's bronze-medal showdown will be a rematch of a pool-play meeting on Sunday, Jan. 9, won by the United States, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22).
In the women's gold medal match, Japan will take on top-seeded Ukraine, which dominated Italy in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-9, 25-11.
The USA men finished eighth overall after losing to Japan in the seventh-place match, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21). The Americans, who ranked fourth in Pool B after the preliminary rounds, finished the tournament with a record of 2-4 overall.
Italy and Ukraine will play for the gold medal on Thursday night, while Iran and Russia will compete against each other in the bronze medal match.
