First Summer Deaf Encounter to be held this May

(Manila, Philippines) In line with its goal of strengthening linkages with the public schools for the Deaf in the Manila area, the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) will be holding its first ever Deaf Summer Encounter from May 9-11, 2005 at the CSB campus in Taft, Manila.

For three days, 31 participants from the Philippine School for the Deaf and Manila High School's Silahis ng Pagkakaisa Program will be participating in this enriching program which includes classes in Filipino Sign Language (FSL) and personal safety, sports clinic and performing arts workshops.

The Summer Deaf Encounter is spearheaded by the Student Activities Unit (SAU) of the SDEAS' Office for Deaf Esteem and Formation (O-DEAF) in cooperation with the Catholic Ministry to Deaf People (CMDP).

This unique summer program aims to provide opportunities for the Deaf participants' personal growth and development through training and exposure in the abovementioned areas. It's also an important venue for SDEAS faculty members and student volunteers to be of service to other Deaf individuals outside the CSB community by sharing their knowledge and experiences.
