GET READY FOR A LONG,
HHHOTTT SUMMER!!

OUTFEST 2005 IS HERE!

Well, almost! For those of you who are new to Outfest - the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival - we are in our 23rd year and continue as California's largest film festival! And we want to welcome you to the FUN!!!

2005 marks our 6th year of continuous service to the Deaf/HH community, and we're proud to offer services to both our festivals (summer's OUTFEST and winter's FUSION) as well as the year round weekly screening series which takes place at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

As Outfest is a nonprofit organization, we're pleased and proud to offer ASL interpreting for our D/HH patrons and members. Each year, we work to expand our offerings and positive contact for and with this community

OUTFEST 2005:

THE 23rd LOS ANGELES GAY AND LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL
FESTIVAL DATES: 7 - 18 JULY 2005

This year, OUTFEST is running HHHOTTT! with more than 200 excellent feature and short film programs to see! We'll keep you cool in your seat, but our films are sure to light a fire in you!!

DHHS is servicing 50 separate events over the course of the 12-day festival. Now, if you'd like to view more specific information about the festival ahead of time, to look over the more than 200 programs, or find out more about the organization itself, please feel free to check out these links- http://www.outfest.

DHHS specifically targets
(Non-English-Language Films!) and SWEs (Spoken-Word Events!) for ASL interpreting service (we also try to keep a sense of humor wherever possible! ;-) ), so keep an eye out for "SUBTITLED" in the program description for those screenings we service.

COME TO OUTFEST'S INCREDIBLE GALA EVENTS

We also provide interpreters at all Outfest's premiere Gala Events: from OPENING NIGHT (a NELF!) to our TWO CENTERPIECE events (one is a NELF) to AWARDS NIGHT (also a NELF this year!) and CLOSING NIGHT, we encourage all our deaf/hard of hearing members and patrons to come see the OUTSTANDING features we'll be screening at this year's festival!

NEW CI TECHNOLOGY

A new generation of cochlear implants was unveiled recently by Australian hearing implant pioneer Cochlear Corporation. Called the Nucleus Freedom implant, it took seven years and $76 million (US) to develop and features four tiny computers that can separate important sounds from background noise, reported the U.K. news service AFB. The new system represents a "quantum leap forward in terms of sophistication and design," said Cochlear's chief scientist, Jim Patrick, and "will revolutionize the lives of the hearing impaired." Designed for people born deaf or with moderate-to-profound hearing loss, the Nucleus Freedom device mimics natural hearing by using "SmartSound" technologies to soften distracting sounds in crowds and to automatically adjust sound levels to improve comfort in noisy environments.
