Mumbai, Oct. 3 (PTI): The US $ 2.59 billion Mahindra Group on Sunday launched its 60th anniversary celebrations with an aim to bring 'sound' to 60 hearing-impaired underprivileged children across the country.

Handing over the first two Cochlear Implant kits at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President A P J Abdul Kalam, said the mission of Mahindra and Mahindra would bring music to the lives of children who were profoundly deaf, the company said in a release here.

"Being deaf means that the child cannot hear the sweetest sound in the world - the words of their mother and father... I greet Mahindra and Mahindra for an excellent purpose and mission," Kalam said hailing the business behemoth's initiative as "excellent".

Mahindra Group Chairman Keshub Mahindra said after exploring several options, this year they decided to support the lives of 60 hearing-impaired children from the poorest of the poor in the society by using the most modern technology.

"Our main focus so far has been on using education as a toll to enable children overcome challenges of birth, social and economic structures. This time, we thought we would combine medical technology with education to give some of these profoundly hearing-impaired children a new lease of life," Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Group, Anand Mahindra, said.
