Washington, DC—Ford’s Theatre kicks off the holiday season with its annual production of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas (November 16 – December 31) and the return of Michael Wilson’s wonderfully magical adaptation of this beloved classic.

The Washington Post last year called the regional premiere of Wilson’s adaptation an “A Christmas Carol with lots of spirit…” and noted that “just as enchanting in Ford’s production is Martin Rayner’s performance in the lead role.” This year, Rayner’s blusterous miserly Ebenezer Scrooge continues to bring renewed clarity to this famous villain, whose cruelty and ultimate redemption are the central themes and the very heart of one of literature’s most heralded stories.

Ford’s A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas turns a fantastical/magical spotlight on the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future as they all take on attributes of characters Scrooge encounters on the streets of London. Of course, the other familiar characters are present, including Bob Cratchit, his son Tiny Tim, and the rest of the Cratchit family, as well as Jacob Marley’s ghost, Mrs. Dilbert, Nephew Fred, the Fezziwigs and all the others.

“Ford’s is thrilled to once again present this wonderful adaptation of A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas, and we are especially delighted that Washington audiences have embraced this production, which brings new excitement and joy to this well-known story,” said Ford’s Producing Director Paul R. Tetreault. “It is, after all, the same A Christmas Carol with the same characters we all know and love, but with a sharper focus on the real meaning of the holiday spirit,” said Tetreault.

Although we all know this tale as A Christmas Carol, Dickens called his work A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas. In his 1843 preface, he wrote, “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly….”

Director Matt August, who created Ford’s production, has returned to supervise this year’s holiday treasure. On Broadway, he served as associate director for Henry IV, Invention of Love and The Full Monty, which he also directed in Australia, winning a Helpmann Award nomination for best director. August has directed for regional theatres around the country, including San Diego’s Old Globe and Connecticut’s Long Wharf Theatre.

I-CAPTION Assistive Technology
This season, Ford’s also is proud to announce that I-Caption devices will be available throughout the run of A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas and will allow Deaf and hard of hearing patrons to follow the dialogue on stage. I-Caption technology is the latest innovation in assistive technology from Sound Associates, Inc., which has generously donated the devices to Ford’s Theatre. The I-Caption system features a proprietary handheld unit that displays the text of the entire show verbatim, in real time from any seat in the house. The text is automated and synchronized with sound and lighting cues to accommodate pacing variations from performance to performance. A polarized screen keeps nearby patrons from being distracted by light or moving text. The system made its debut in Deaf West’s production of Big River on Broadway and was available for all performances of the national touring companies as well as during the production at Ford’s Theatre.

Opening Act Workshops
During the run of A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas, Ford’s Theatre will host five Opening Act Workshops (November 30; December 1, 7, 8, 14, 15), which allow students to learn more about theatre appreciation. Students and teachers explore key themes, relationships and issues through interactive exercises, improvisation and discussion. MARTIN RAYNER (Ebenezer Scrooge). Martin is delighted to return to Ford's to reprise his role as Scrooge. Since last year he has performed in the American premier of The Bird Sanctuary with Hayley Mills and played the lead in the NPR broadcast of 16 Wounded. He spent much of the year in LA doing TV, cartoons and voice work, including a Tiger Woods Nike commercial. In New York, recent Broadway shows include 16 Wounded, and at Lincoln Center: Pater in Stoppard's The Invention of Love. Other New York appearances include The Public Theatre: Charles VI and Gower in Henry V (Central Park); Minetta Lane: Henry in Travels with My Aunt (Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards); The Public Theatre: Frizer in Kit Marlowe; Cherry Lane Theatre: Hans in 16 Wounded. MICHAEL WILSON (Adapter). Mr. Wilson’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol is in its eighth year at Hartford Stage and is beginning its tenth year this holiday season at the Alley Theatre. Now in his eighth season with the Hartford Stage, he has directed eighteen productions including the premieres of the Broadway comedy Enchanted April, the world premieres of Horton Foote’s The Carpetbagger’s Children and Eve Ensler’s Necessary Targets, both of which transferred Off-Broadway in 2002. Under his leadership, Hartford Stage has focused on the development of new work, with fourteen world premieres, six Broadway or Off-Broadway transfers and seven festivals. Most recently, Mr. Wilson directed Floyd and Cleo Under the Western Sky and the world premiere of David Grimm’s The Learned Ladies of Park Avenue.

G.W. MERCIER (Set Designer). TOM WATSON (Wig and Hair Designer). Head of the wig department, The Metropolitan Opera. Other credits: Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, New York Theatre Workshop, A.R.T. of Boston, Manhattan Theatre Club, and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.
