Deaf Yoga Enthusiasts are Invited to DVD-Signing Event
Founder of Deaf Yoga to Appear at Borders
Austin, TX [April 17, 2006] – With the release of Deaf Yoga for Beginners, yoga enthusiasts who are deaf or hard of hearing are invited to a DVD release party at Borders Bookstore in Austin on April 22. Deaf Yoga founder Lila Lolling will provide a lecture on yoga, answer questions and sign copies of the DVD.
Yoga, a 5,000-year-old practice, is a popular choice for exercise in the U.S., with six percent of Americans practicing a regular yoga routine. As a traditional Hatha yoga instructor, Lolling brings yoga to deaf people and signers through Deaf Yoga, a company dedicated to sharing the traditional teachings of yoga with people who sign. Deaf Yoga has produced Deaf Yoga for Beginners, the first-ever DVD devoted to yoga for deaf people and signers. The subtitled DVD introduces yoga’s basic principles in American Sign Language, sharing practical information such as how to breathe properly, the history of yoga, and energy systems.
“I’d like to invite deaf people who are interested in yoga to come to this event because I want to introduce them to the benefits and power of yoga. I also want to give them a forum to air their concerns,†Lolling, who is hearing, says. “Many have shared with me their struggles with the lack of accessibility in yoga classes led by non-signing instructors. This event is where they can share their experiences, network and discover new, innovative strategies for classes that aren’t taught in American Sign Language.â€
Lolling points out that Borders is the first retail store to openly sell the DVD. “ It’s important that the signing community show up to represent the need for accessible yoga. In fact, this will be a quite beneficial gathering that clearly demonstrates the deaf community’s desire for equal access. This is a chance to build even more bridges between the hearing and deaf yoga communities.â€
A video featuring Lolling and deaf yoga enthusiasts is at www.deafnation.com. The DVD-signing event will be held on April 22 at 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., at Borders, 4477 South Lamar in Austin, TX and is open at no charge to all interested parties, including children. American Sign Language interpreters will be available. Additional information, including details on workshops, retreats and the DVD, is at www.deafyoga.com.
