CMU to mark Deaf Awareness Week

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University will host a variety of activities Oct. 2-5 in recognition of Deaf Awareness Week.

This is the fifth year of CMU's participation in Deaf Awareness Week, which celebrates the culture, language nd heritage unique to individuals who are deaf. The CMU department of communication disorders audiology program has hosted the event since 2002.
Events include:
Monday, Oct. 2: A Deaf Awareness Week Information Fair in the Health Professions Building atrium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. Peter Cook, an American Sign Language storyteller, will perform in the University Center's Second Floor Auditorium; admission is $5.
Tuesday, Oct. 3: An American Sign Language demonstration will take place in the Health Professions Building atrium from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. From 7 to 9 p.m., the movie "Beyond Silence" will be shown in the Health Professions Building rooms 1253, 1257 and 2252.
Wednesday, Oct. 4: A silent bring-your-own lunch with communication disorders faculty member Kendra Miller will take place from 12 to 1 p.m. on the front lawn of the Health Professions Building.
Thursday, Oct. 5: "Welcome to Deaf World," a program hosted by communication disorders faculty member Kevin Cramer, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in Finch Fieldhouse. The demonstration allows hearing individuals to experience the world of the deaf.
